Hot potatoes: Whitecaps September MLS games vs. NYC FC and Seattle sold out

Were you planning on going to the Whitecaps’ MLS games on either Sept. 19 vs. Seattle or Sept. 26 vs. NYC FC?

Don’t bother: they’re sold out. (The team says suites are still available.)

The Whitecaps have two home games before the sold-out affairs: Wednesday night vs. Colorado (Marc Weber and I set that game up here on the latest Whitecaps Weekly podcast) and next Wednesday, a CONCACAF Champions League affair vs. Honduran club CD Olimipia.

There are two further MLS home games before the regular season concludes at the end of October: Oct. 7 vs. top of the table rivals FC Dallas and on the final day of the season, Oct. 25, vs. Houston.

The Whitecaps have averaged 20,725 fans per MLS game in 2015. The team lists BC Place’s capacity at 21,000, though as we all know, they tarp off a number of seats in the upper rows of the lower bowl and the entire upper deck is blocked off.

The team has said since joining MLS they want to create “urgency” before even considering moving capacity above 21,000. In 2011, the LA Galaxy home match still had tickets available a couple days in advance. When the game sold out, the team was firm: no more tickets. Plan ahead next time, they said.

Now that they’re selling out crucial, late season affairs more than a week in advance, have they now reached the desired “urgency?” If and when they qualify for the playoffs – and get a home match – it will be worth watching how brisk tickets sales are. If there’s high demand, it’s hard to see the team turning down a potential big pay day.

The lower bowl’s maximum capacity is around 27,500 tickets.
